Who says you can’t follow your passion?

My years of freelance art journalism are exactly that – following my passion for modern and contemporary art, for art collecting, and of course, my love of writing. Not only were weekly art reviews for the Atlanta Journal-Constitution a labor of love, but so were assignments for ARTnews and Raw Vision, as well as providing essays for museum and artist catalogs.

More writing from the heart? As a blogger for Huffington Post, I primarily muse on marriage and divorce, single parenting, and dating after divorce. I cover subjects that fascinate us all – relationships – touching on our children, parents, siblings, and partners.

I consider it essential to stay engaged in public venues that continue the cultural conversation, and that includes addressing personal journeys as we elaborate on social issues.

The Challenge: An executive in a niche management consulting practice seeks to expand business through social media PR. His company currently has no online dialog with clients, partners, prospects, or the press.

The Process: Assessing the characteristics of his organization and its stakeholders, we identify channels to expand his network and open lines of communication not only with clients, but industry leaders, potential partners, and press. Twitter, LinkedIn, and professional communities are used as venues for increasing awareness of his services, upcoming events, and managing his online reputation.

Project Elements: Consulting, competitive analysis, research, strategic media selection, social media management, business writing, ongoing monitoring and measurement of progress.

The Results: Growing national presence outside this executive’s usual regional network. Expanded dialog with specific communities; increased visibility to press.

Follow-up: Progress is monitored via email, phone meetings, and various analytics.

The Challenge: A highly credentialed entrepreneur seeks to expand speaking and consulting opportunities. Search Engine Optimization (SEO) is misaligned and underutilized for her targeted audience and services.

The Process: Working together by phone, we clarify objectives, map out initial strategies for each, discuss the options, priorities, and timeframes. With multiple web sites and a clear niche, she rarely appears in searches as expert in her fields. SEO (Search Engine Optimization) is refined to highlight high impact search terms that align with her expertise, and are appropriately included in highly informative content.

Project Elements: Consulting, competitive analysis, SEO analysis, content review, content editing, ongoing monitoring and measurement of progress.

The Results: Repositioned for maximum exposure through her web presence, this client is now experiencing significantly higher page views, higher rankings in search engine results, improved Alexa, and broadening Facebook as well as Twitter audience. She is exploring new venues for professional engagement, along with new relationships in her field.

Follow-up: Periodic feedback sessions allow for monitoring progress, reviewing content for alignment to goals and SEO, and identifying additional opportunities.

It wasn’t a dare exactly. More like an experiment, and then a labor of love.

When an old friend suggested I start a blog, I attempted – twice – only to set the idea aside. In 2009 he urged me to try again, and I did. At the time, I had just completed a project, I missed the pace of my newspaper days, and I was hungry for more hands-on involvement in social media. Although my world was already crazy busy – juggling freelance work and raising two boys – I needed a mechanism for reconfiguring the pieces of an old life, a harried present, and moving into an emerging future.

And Daily Plate of Crazy was born.

It was just the ticket for me to play, to learn, to articulate my questions, and to hone my skills by intentionally writing in a variety of styles and voices.

Unlike most personal blogs, I didn’t seek to chronicle my daily happenings. I wanted to experiment, to write lifestyle articles, to address whatever caught my fancy at a point in time. I write from life, rather than “telling all,” using experience as a starting point for exploring emotions, observations, and issues many of us share. And by the way, Big Little Wolf is based on a nickname, and offered relative anonymity – among other things, so as not to embarrass two teenage sons!

With more than 1,400 articles in the archives to date, the site enjoys a growing readership in both the U.S. and abroad.

As for this journey, I could never have imagined how the site would grow, or grow on me. I could never have imagined the extraordinary individuals who would join the conversation. I could never have imagined the compassionate community, and the pleasure of getting to know other readers and writers. Together, we’ve been learning, laughing, and making a difference in each others’ lives.

Daily Plate of Crazy is a gathering spot for thinking men and women who are unafraid to discuss their challenges as well as their triumphs. It’s a place for exploring a woman’s life, a writer’s life, a parent’s life – for processing change, however bumpy – and my own (all too common) issues to do with marriage, divorce, and single motherhood. It’s my safe haven, and possibly yours. A place to deal with difficult realities in honest ways that nonetheless encourage us to move forward – regardless of the obstacles we encounter.

I expect Daily Plate of Crazy to evolve as the cultural conversation continues, frequently addressing some of those “big questions” we all ask ourselves, as so many of us struggle to make sense of our daily grind – whatever life dishes out, and yes – whatever we can make of it.
